i'm always here to support creative endeavors! i read your comment last night and have since been thinking that i might finally try to work my way through The Artist's Way -- but taking a month for each chapter instead of a week. a goal of finishing before our 40th birthdays sounds ambitious yet somehow do-able.
I’m so glad to see that *the* canvas is finally unwrapped!
You didn’t ask me, but I’ll offer anyway - I think you (subconsciously) chose a big canvas because you always think big and do big things — even if your real reason at the time might have had to do with filling wall space outside *the* gallery wall.
In all seriousness, it’s lovely to watch you coming back to yourself outside of what ended up a soul sucking last year at your old job and as a newlywed. You now have the time and the energy to explore new things — DJ classes, painting at home, golf?! — now that other things are more settled. And you aren’t a nightmare, and as someone has been with you at a few parties, you’re very fun.
You’ve heard me say it a million times this year so far, but I’m really trying hard to find the little moments of whimsy in my day to day life, and so much of that is grounded in being creative and trying new things. I’m trying to get over my intense need to master things on the first go round, but that’s a work in progress.
I’m also shocked that Christina didn’t have a German word for that moment; do we need to ask Claudia?
It's been really fun to return to things I liked as a kid -- I think that's pretty whimsical! Intellectually, it's wild to expect ourselves to be good at things on the first try, so challenging ourselves/allowing ourselves to be bad at things is also an important part of the creative process! For every great book (for example), there are probably a few not-so-great first drafts, ya know?! Why are we so hard on ourselves about things that should be FUN??? (rhetorical)
(And I do think we need to ask Claudia because such a word MUST exist...)
LOVED this post - I really admire your vulnerability. As someone who has seen your creative endeavors in multiple formats (writing, DJ-ing, video editing, scrapbooking, trip spreadsheeting, and now painting), it is so lovely to see you come back to yourself.

I loved reading this, Shannon. And it’s made me a little sad for not being more present with you. For not supporting you more the last few years.
